Total drogenfrei!

DakhaBrakha –  contemporary world music sensation from Ukraine

Minimal ethno, mesmerizing long beautiful songs, psycho-folk, acoustic trip-hop

«The best team in the sphere of world music throughout the former Soviet Union» (Afisha.ru)

Dakha Brakha is still somewhat of a cult phenomenon in Ukraine. For the past five years, this award-winning, theatrical quartet of multi-instrumentalist singers has been experimenting with Ukrainian folk melodies and rhythms, motifs of Eastern Europe and Western Asia,  mixing genuine, ethnically specific material with minimalism. DhakhaBrakha create wild and unforgettable music that is at once sacred and modern.

The sweeping charisma of the act lies in its roots – Dakha Brakha was founded in 2004 by Vladyslav Troitskiy, the director of an avant-garde theatre Dakh, and the influence is still evident in the shows of the band.

DakhaBrakha are:

Marko Halanevych - vocals, darbuka, tabla, didgeridoo, accordion, trombone
Iryna Kovalenko - vocals, djembe, bass drums, accordion, percussion, bugay, zgaleyka
Olena Tsibulska - vocals, bass drums, percussion, garmoshka
Nina Garenetska - vocals, cello, bass drum

.Insistent song melodies, gathered partly from the band’s trips to Ukraine’s villages, developed and made rich, fierce, dark and wild by overlaying and criss-crossing them, over grinding, propulsive textures of drums, wild cello, wheezing accordion, reedy-squealing zhaleika and bagpipe, bubbling trombone, narrowing focus to heart-rending, impassioned solo vocals. Andrew Cronshaw about the album “Na mezhi” for fRoots Magazine.

"This is a phenomenal Ukrainian outfit, mixing genuine, ethnically specific material with minimalist jazz and the precision of techno-beats, too... They're making the natural folk music of the future."

Leisurely crawl with a bow on the cello, tapping rhythms of nomadic tribes, blowing fur accordion, singing in a stentorian rural votes, they are creating one large, loud etnodzhaz absolutely hypnotic persuasion, and the transition to the English Language Society and forth, alternating between quiet lamentations with dancing ditties, knit Ukrainian marriage with African funeral, folk traditions with quicksand minimalism… …”DakhaBrakha” - this is perhaps an example of what can be sought and found in the ancient traditions, and in them is important, not so much Authentic as present in the soil strength of the music.. “ Aleksandr Gorbachev, “Afisha Moscow” 10.11.2009
